Nokia report 90 percent less profit in Q1, but sell 5800 like hotdogs

Nokia reported their financial status at the end of Q1 this year and it does not sound good. The biggest phone manufacturer at this stage has 90% profit drop, 27% sales drop and the Finns even started to cut some slack positions. Sure sounds like an economic downturn, doesn't it?

Yep, the financial crisis didn't spare the current number one mobile phone manufacturer - Nokia. They announced their Q1 financial status and there are huge drops in every one aspect.

First and most terrifying is the profit drop - the current profit calculates in 122 million euro compared to the Q1 2008 when it was 1.2 billion euro. It's 90% down.

Next are the sales of course. This year Nokia made 9.28 billion euro, but in Q1 2008 the company succeed to make 12.7 billion euro. The difference is 27% down.

In time of crisis the first step is job cutting and here it comes. Nokia gave the axe to 1700 employees worldwide only in March.

But, hey it's not as bad as it sounds. The company shares rose with 8 percent in the last months.

Nokia also claims that in the last quarter they sold 2.8 million units of the popular touch-based 5800 XpressMusic and that they would have sold many more had not they been a bit underpowered. As of now they will be shipping a million 5800 units every month.

Nobody really knows when the economic downturn will end, but Nokia still stand their position as a top manufacturer with 37% market share (2% down compared to Q1 2008).

Sony Ericsson score 358M EUR loss in Q1, but have a new high-ender in store for us this May

We are continuing our dreary Q1 results coverage and this time it's Sony Ericsson. The company has just announced all the Q1 details and they are quite bleak at first sight. With the economic turmoils the gadget-making business doesn't seem like something to take part in right now. But then again that holds true for almost every manufacturing branch these days.

Sony Ericsson report 358 million euro in losses before taxes this quarter and that's without counting all the restructuring charges. In case you're wondering, the "restructuring" included 2000 employees getting laid off, and there will be another 2000 on the chopping block soon, with 200 million euro more to be spent for "restructuring charges".

Despite the efforts Sony Ericsson market share is shrinking to 6 percent as compared to the 8 percent they had last quarter.

This is a direct result from 36% less shipments they accomplished this quarter than a year ago. It's quite in tune with their predictions for the global mobile market shrinking 10% this year. As we reported yesterday, Nokia is taking a pretty big hit too.

It's not all gloom and doom however - all this is within Sony Ericsson's predictions and they have plans in motion to ride out the rough patch. Their cost saving program for the first half of 2009 completed with 300 million euro saved and the restructuring charges were 113 million less than the estimates.

A new cost saving program targeting 400 million savings will go in operation and is to be completed by about the same time next year. Furthermore, they have 1.1 billion hard, cold cash in the bank (due to the positive net cash flow) so rumors of bankruptcy are unfounded.

Sony Ericsson have further plans to battle the losses - namely their Entertainment Unlimited product lineup, which focuses simultaneously on music, imaging, gaming and content services. The first Entertainment Unlimited phone to hit the market will be the Sony Ericsson W995 with Idou following in the second half of 2009.

And finally, the most intriguing news to all gadget-lovers out there - the next Sony Ericsson phones from the Entertainment Unlimited lineup will be announced on 28 May 2009.

Samsung results to shine in Q1 2009?
Amid worldwide doom and gloom in mobile handset markets, we may have a ray of sunshine soon.

With everyone from Nokia, to Sony Ericsson and Motorola reporting drops in mobile shipments, multi-thousand layouts and losses in hundreds of millions, Samsung seems set to report a pretty good Q1 results.

At least that’s what Korea brokerage research firm Woori Investment&Securities tells us.
Though Samsung promised 10-15% decline in handset shipments for this year, in the first quarter they seem to have done better job then expected, and should sell 46.3 million devices, which is the same amount they did in Q1 last year.

It should help them increase their global market share to 19% from 18% last quarter and 14.1% in Q1, 2008, if the forecasts of 14% drop in overall global handset sales to 243 mil. units pan out.

Samsung’s success has been attributed to the rising smartphone sales and improvements in European and Chinese markets. They also helped to increase average selling price for Samsung phones and restore healthy 7.4% operating margin for mobiles.

HTC’s Q1 2009 looking less rosy

Despite the company’s own projections of double-digit growth in 2009, HTC’s latest Q1 2009 financial report is less than rosy. Compared to the same period a year ago, HTC saw its profits slide some 30%, resulting in first quarter profits of NT$4.89 billion (US$148 million). While still profitable, HTC’s Q1 2009 highlights the rocky economic climate that handset manufacturers will have to battle in order to grow their market share.

HTC pulled in first quarter revenue of NT$31.59 billion (US$954 million), down from NT$32.70 billion (US$988 million) in the first quarter of 2008.

The fast-growing smartphone maker is blaming delayed product shipments for the fall in profits. The HTC Magic has been delayed for another month, pushing back the launch of the second-generation Android device. And, with the HTC Touch Pro2 and Touch Diamond2 still waiting to blitz the global smartphone market, HTC has yet to realize revenue from their most visible bunch of mobile phones.

The coming quarters could be good to HTC’s bottom line, and may help push the double-digit growth that HTC is still expecting to see.

Samo neka njima pada prodaja i profit ( nisam u fazonu da komsiji crkne krava ) jer ce se onda vise truditi oko kupaca i izbacivati bolje modele po pristupacnijim cenama. Bar ja tako mislim
5800 je odlican primer, fon sa velikim TS i OS i GPS a kosta oko 300e i to Nokija.
Nadam se da ce i ostali proizvodjaci poceti da izbacuju jeftinije a dobre modele ( pod proizvodjacima mislim na HTC ).

LG exceed expectations for Q1, seemingly unaware of recession

LG brought home their Q1 report card today and it's all A's. They've managed a good 2.8 billion USD out of handset sales, which exceeded even their own expectations, and are doing 22.6% better than last year.

As far as units shipped LG indeed had a lower score of 22.6 million phones, which is a 7% decline as compared to the previous quarter.

The strongest sellers were midrange phones like the LG Cookie and LG KS360. The KS360 is a surprise - apparently teen's buying power shouldn't be underestimated even in harsh economic times.

Having a firm footing in the midrange, LG plans to push into the high-end segment and achieve a 10% growth during the next quarter. Leading the push will be the likes of the S-Class UI touting Arena, the updated Viewty - the Viewty Smart, as well as the stylish GD900 Crystal.

LG is also trying to widen its market share in North America with the Xenon and Neon, which are available for AT&T (the Neon is available for Rogers as well). Both are messaging oriented and while the Neon is the KS360's twin brother, the Xenon has grown-up looks.

These plans seem optimistic as LG predict the market will shrink 10% this year, coinciding with Sony Ericsson's prediction. On the plus side, LG employees can breathe a sigh of relieve - there's no talk of cutting jobs
here.

Dobro je poznato da ne moze i jefino i dobro, ja sam zadovoljan cenama HTC-a jer stvarno za te sume koliko kostaju mnogo pruzaju. Jedino da ubace bolji kvalitet zvuka i po meni je to dosta. Mada to su opet biznis telefoni.

madness99, ako cemo pravo, u poslednje vreme, je Samsug taj koji ima vise pravih noviteta, a Nokia stancuje "sve isto samo druge maske" modele (izuzetak su naravno 5800 i N97).

To si u pravo tomas, samsung me bas prijatno iznenadio, a n97 ne racunam dok ne izadje.

Nokia je pocela malo kao SE sa Xperijom, na kraju ce zakasniti za konkurencijom.

Pa i ovako je N97 (bar po meni) prevazidjen... Osim TS-a, ja ne vidim nista posebno u njemu... Mislim da je Touch Pro, ovakav kakav je, daleko bolji izbor...

Izgleda da SAmsung i LG pojedose ostale....Samsung tako i tako a LG ostvario jos i profit da ne poveruje covek Nema sale kad je profit u pitanju ovo je jos jedan dokaz...Sto se tice Nokie nemam komentara jer svi znamo sta rade u poslednje vreme...Mada moram da priznam da me je SE malo razocarao mislio sa da ce da budu bolji...nije mi jasno sta cekaju sa novim telefonima drze ih u najavi koliko meseci vec...

LG je klon Samsunga, tako da i ne treba da te cudi previse taj potez Pogledaj modele, videces da imaju dosta slicnih tako je bilo pre, a i sad je tako dobrim delom...

kapoerista mislim da si sad lupio najvecu glupost koju sam ikad cuo....im LG dosta telefona koji lice na druge modele ostalih proizvodjaca ali klon ako pogledas novije modele LG-a i one u najavi pa ih uporedis sa samsungovim neces videti skoro nikakvu slicnost....tako da mislim da nisi u pravu

leonel pratim LG kompaiju da kazem od osnivanja i znam vecinu njihovih modela ako smatrate da od 10 izbacenih modela 3 lice na neku drugu marku da je to klon onda ne znam sta da kazem....zar moram da vas podsecam na LG chocolate? na LG Shine?? na LG Cooki?? na LG Coronu?? LG Prada itd. itd....LG ima vecinu telefona iz tipicno svog asortimana proizvodjen bez icijih primesa...znaci ne slazem se sa vasim misljenjima....uostalom pogledajte nove modele LG-a ja ne vidim da lice ni na jedan drugi telefon....

Ne kazem ja da su 100% isti, al pogledaj celu istoriju... Videces da je LG imao veliki broj telefona koji su bili ISTI kao Samsungovi, a i sto tehno maniac kaze, animacije, widgeti, skoro sve je isto...
Sad je situacija malo drugacija, al prati stanje... Videces da LG izbaci model malo posle samsunga, koji je prakticno isti... Ili samsung prosto ispita trziste preko LG-ja pa i sam uvede slican model... Al to je u sustini to

pa jedno je da je LG "klon" Samsunga a drugo je da imaju nekih dodirnih tacaka.....tehno maniac koji je to widget isti kao na samsungu? ja koristim LG widget na KS20 i on nema ni 1 istu stvar uradjenu kao Samsungov...sem ako ne gledas to sto je na desktopu(kao sto svaki widget mora da bude) to sto ima precice za SMS i jos ponesto(to je osnovna namena widgeta)

P.S. tehno ne vidim sta su oni to prekopirali u OS-u od Samsunga....ako hocemo iskreno mislim da je i samsungi LG (a i ostali) skinuli izgled menia od Siemens-a...kapoerist ja nevideh ni jedan samsungov model koji je izaso pre gore navedenih LG-jevih modela da mozes da kazes da im je skinuo dizajn....Uostalom zar SAmsung Soul ne podseca na LG chocolate?? koliko mi se cini chocolate je 1 izaso...

Ma danas se vise ne zna ko koga kopira/klonira,opste je ludilo.Nokia ide cak i korak dalje ona tuzna pocela sama sebe da kopira.
Inace sto se tice Samsung i LG marke,modeli imaju ponekad iste linije i primetno je da neko od nekoga ponekad "prepise domaci".
Do sada je u vecini slucajeva Lg "prepisivao", ponesto, sto je meni logicno i nimalo me ne cudi.

wicked jednoje prepisivanje i izbacivanje slicnih modela na trziste a drugo je kloniranje....uostalom to sm i pokusao da objanism....kao sto rece wicked svaka kompanija pomalo "prepise" od neke druge....
